Creating a document

I'll press escape then option two to write a new document. The difference between a letter and a document is that a letter asks you for an address and then Guide lays out the letter for you, whereas a document is just a blank page where you can do what you wish. The document I’m going to write is a book and my book needs a title, so at the top of the screen I shall write my title. Now I’m going to write the first sentence of my book and I’m going to include some spelling mistakes so you can hear the Guide spell-checker. I have spelt windy incorrectly, and as soon as I press space there is a “quack” sound which alerts me to the fact that there may be a spelling mistake. I could press the back space key and correct my mistakes, but what I’m going to do is when I've finished my book I’m going to spell-check the whole thing. Before we do that, I’m going to make the title of my book bold and green.

Now I've finished my book I want to spell-check it, so we press escape. I can pick a number of actions at this point, and I'm going to select option number five. The likely corrections are listed, and I’ll use the up and down arrow keys to hear what we've got. Press enter on the correct word. Now we can just read through line by line with the corrections in it. That’s perfect, so I can press escape, and that will take me to the actions menu again. Select option three to save this. I'm going to call it "my book", then press enter to continue. That’s the start of the book written and saved. I'll now press escape to go back to the main menu.

Surfing the Internet

Select option three to go and surf the web. I’ll just type in the website address then press enter to continue. With a Guide web browser, we can either use the mouse or the keyboard. If you use the mouse, you can click on any piece of text for Guide to read out. We can also click on the zoom + and zoom – button at the top to magnify the text on screen. If we move our mouse over a link that will lead us to another page, Guide will read out the name of that link. If we use the keyboard we can simply use the arrow keys to move about the page and right click on the text.

There are two links at the bottom of the highlighted article. One saying “full article link” and the other saying “video link”. We will follow the latter and see if we can watch a bit of a video. We can then go back to the previous page.
